Casual: Corduroy Shorts

As mentioned in previous posts this year, we live in a world where the weather is so unpredictable. Some days it may feel like fall and spring temperature wise, but yet we are in the winter season. What do I wear?!

In order to maintain your outdoor appearance to the general, one must enhance the level of versatility within his or her wardrobe. What that means is that you should invest in clothing that can be worn under any circumstance.

This leads us to today’s featured post. Recently, we had the opportunity to meet up with one of our new personal style models this season, Kennisha. Our recent Temple graduate shows us how to combine winter garments with not so cold temperatures.

Before examining Kennisha’s outfit further, we provide a brief historical overview of corduroys. The ancestral roots of corduroy date back over a thousand years ago. It originated from an Ancient Egyptian cotton weave known as fustian. According to GQ Magazine, “There’s evidence that indicates corduroy has its roots as far back as 200 B.C. Egypt. This was when the rough ancestor of corduroy, Fustian first surfaced on the scene.”

By the 12th century, European distributors recognized the worth and appeal of the fabric and began selling it within their own markets. This ancient textile once used as an everyday garment transitioned into an exotic piece of fabric that was in high demand and only affordable by the wealthy.

Four centuries later, Fustian was still in the trading regiment of the European cotton trade as it was distributed to London, Norwich, Lancashire and Ireland using a variety of blends.

Eventually, Fustian became affordable again during the 18th century. Worn as a uniform by the general public, this fabric became known as the cotton velvet or what we know today as corduroy.

We really appreciate Kennisha’s entire outfit. Especially since it can be worn in any season. She paired her graphic T-shirt with a red printed cardigan from Ross. Both pieces could be worn in a range of temperature conditions. Kennisha states, “This cardigan is dope, I can wear it with anything. A pair of jeans or shorts, with sneaker or heels, it’s very versatile.”

Her orange, Forever 21, corduroy shorts and black leather boots complete her look. She states, “Being that the shorts are corduroy material, I could get away with wearing them in the winter over printed stockings, paired with a nice pair of knew high boots or wear them in the summer as well.”

Now that you met Kennisha, what do you think? Feel free to give us some feedback in the comments section below.
