Where are you from?

I’m from Long Island, NY, but I’ve lived in Philly for ten to eleven years.

How do you define your personal style? What or who are your some of your style inspirations?

My personal style is either fully clothed or very naked. I like to show off my curves, and I like to embrace my body. I really like the confidence of Lizzo, and the way she steps out. I love the sleek, smooth styles of Gabrielle Union and Tracee Ellis Ross.

What are the essential pieces you must have in your closet?

I must have some well fitting jeans that show off my body and fit comfortably. Also, I need a great bra. They’re important for any shirt I’m wearing. I also think a plain white shirt that I can dress up or down is essential.

Where do you shop?

Zara, Banana Republic, and Urban Outfitters. Those are my spots!

Describe your personal style in three words?

Clean, risqué, and curvy.

Any fashion related tips?

You wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you. Have confidence in whatever you put on, and you’ll make it look good!

CROWN EFFECT…His Hue, Their Truth

“CROWN EFFECT…His Hue, Their Truth celebrates the emotional and cultural impacts of headwraps while challenging modern day perceptions of masculinity.”

Happy Juneteenth! Thanks for stopping by and checking out CROWN EFFECT!

Shooting began in early June, and we’ve been working around the clock to ensure the project’s completion.

Without further ado, enjoy the first iteration of CROWN EFFECT below!

BACKGROUND

Near the late 18th century, head coverings were imposed on enslaved black women as a method of control. These head coverings were used as mental weapons, to further strengthen the agenda of white supremacy. While their male counterparts were forced to wear hats, enslaved women were required to wrap their hair. Remember, slaves were considered cattle or “non-human.” To their masters, they were representations of inferiority, subordination, and poverty.

In time, the headwrap went through a period of reclamation. Once known as a status of inferiority, these enslaved women found alternative ways to express themselves. The headwrap created a space for identity, empowerment, and community. Black women found ways to become “human” and individuals once again.

In 2021, head coverings are still being wrapped today. While considered powerful symbols of independence and creativity, they’re valued by many cultures and communities across the world.

THE PROJECT

The goal for this project was to feature a diverse group black men wearing headwraps. A combination of solid and bright colors were incorporated to broaden the stereotypical, gender based misconceptions associated with masculinity.

Helen from Wrap & Sip styled each individual head covering!

HOW TO WEAR A PLEATED SKIRT FOR DIRT CHEAP

KATURRAH | PHILADELPHIA, PA

What she wore: A pleated midi skirt, moto jacket, and a geometric print shirt.

Style tip: It doesn’t have to be a tennis match for you to wear a pleated skirt out and about. Rock your favorite blouse and leather jacket to match. We love how this look works with a pair of sneakers.
