Brands: Lifestyle Interrupted

photography_edits_3093Fashion and spirituality are two words that don’t often find themselves in the same sentence. However, as of lately, there has been a growing movement to bring the two concepts together.

With all that being said, today’s featured brand, Lifestyle Interrupted, aims to define spirituality through retail expression. Last month, we had an opportunity to sit down and chat with the creator, Sharon Joseph, to discuss her brand in detail. Check out the full interview below!

Brands: Steeve Sam

As part of our ongoing “Brands” posts, we recently had an opportunity to sit down chat with another aspiring artist, Steeve Sam. Born and raised in Cap-Haitian, Haiti, Steeve Sam is a fresh new face on the Hip Hop scene.Want to know more? Feel free to check out his full interview below!

brands_steevesam1_021616_02Photography: @BryonSummers

Why did you want to become an artist? What inspired you the most?
“I knew that I wanted to really become an artist when a friend of mine told me randomly one day that one of my records stopped him from committing suicide. Up until that point, I felt I had the generic response to why I wanted to be an artist. What inspires me the most is knowing that I can build up a human being’s frequency, confidence in self, life, love and people in the mind, body, and soul with music. I can make people smile and feel, really feel something.”

“Now, I know this was a not a cake walk for you in the slightest. So, have you experienced any obstacles in your music career so far? It’s certainly not a cake walk. Even when I’m where I aim to be, it still won’t be. I’ve lost everything at different points of living my dream. Friends. Relationships. Jobs. It’s easy to say you’re going to live your dream, but to totally be living your dream in a world of conformity takes a different kind of focus, mind-state, will power, and respect for the creator. I make genre-free music, and people always laugh like “what is that”, and I calmly tell them “music”. When did compartmentalizing music become the thing, and not appreciating music, ALL of music?”

Can you tell us a time when you had to make a big sacrifice for your music career?
“Every day! I personally don’t feel a lot of people realize that living your dream is a daily sacrifice, especially in a world of conformity. You have the doubters, haters, critics, idea-takers, energy-vampires, the people who want to censor your feelings – all included in your quest to seek creative fulfillment.”

How are you able to distinguish yourself from others?
“I am myself. That’s it, flaws and all. We are all uniquely different, though we are all the same at the same time, which is the beauty of life. There is beauty in differences.”

brands_steevesam1_021616_01Photography: @BryonSummers

If you could pick one producer and artist to collaborate with, who would you select and why?
“I would have loved to work with Sun Ra because he was one of the most influential and imitated artists that most people don’t seem to know about. He taught most of everyone’s favorite jazz musicians. He also had one of the most amazing backgrounds that I have come to know as an artist. His knowledge was so broad, and what he was teaching us back then we are still trying to figure out today. Even though he is no longer alive, I would still choose him before any current artist just because of how inspiring he was.”

What are your long term goals for yourself as an artist?
“Creating an Earth Ship is number one; a holistic creative center where artists can be healed creatively, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I want to become a creative diplomat, and use music as a means to combat injustice all over the world. I want to leave a legacy for my future kids and kids’ kids.”

brands_steevesam1_021616_03Photography: @BryonSummers

Where do you see yourself next five years?
I see myself traveling and doing a lot of community work, especially in third world countries. I see myself being more connected to self, life, love, family, and being closer to waking more of humanity up to the issues that really matter on a human level. I will also be mindful to allow what the creator wants and needs of me, to walk hand in hand with how I feel, what I say, and all that I do.

Wow, that was an amazing interview! We expect great things in near future.

Brands: Milano Di Rouge

What is your definition of success? Better yet, when do you know you have “made it”? These days all an up and coming designer can hope for is a celebrity co-sign to boost sales. So imagine the feelings that ran through Designer and Owner, Milan, of Milano Di Rouge when her clothing line was unexpectedly the center of attention at Powerhouse 2015. Not only did the line adorn the backs of the show’s celebrity performers, but you could also see the brand on its targeted customer in the audience. You could take that image and it still would not add up to the blood, sweat, and tears that Milan has put into Milano Di Rouge so far. However, on her quest to Making her Dreams a Reality, it is not a bad start.

Check out the interview below to learn more about the luxury street wear brand Milano Di Rouge and what it can add to your closet to give you Unregistered Style:

So what is the style of Milano Di Rouge?
“Milano Di Rouge is a luxury lifestyle street wear brand providing affordable luxury. Our customers are stylish and don’t mind trying raw innovative brands.”

brands_milanodirouge1_012816_01Captain’s Only Capo Jersey Lookbook Retrieved 1/18/2015 From Milanodirouge.com

Seeing how IG lit up during Powerhouse you seem to have a huge male following, tell me how you feel your work is being perceived by the public?
“Well, we have been getting a lot of great feedback. People like the quality and they love the style. A lot of celebrities get the packages we send them for promotion and come back to purchase, with us. [Getting those notifications I felt] so blessed, tears were in my eyes. I worked so hard; I made so many different connections, and honestly I wish I was there to see it. It is unbelievable that Young Chris performed at Powerhouse wearing our jersey.”

That is an amazing feeling I am sure. With Young Chris being a nice name to add to your resume I have to ask; do you cater to more of a male or a female customer?
“I design unisex clothing, but I like to keep a guy in mind first, then I add some of the female essentials.

So the Venus and Mars Jumpsuit…

No! (laughs) With the tight stretchy fabric no way a guy would want to wear it. I am thinking that I want to go back [to the drawing board] on a men’s jumpsuit. It would be like a Men’s Carthart/Dickies suit just more stylish.”

How did you get the Venus and Mars Jumpsuit?
“Actually, I was shopping around, looking for a jumpsuit and not one store had what I was looking for. [I made] something that I would personally want to wear. I created a jumpsuit, went to California to get fabric, and took it to my seamstress. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to create exactly what you are looking for.”

Now that we have mentioned the jumpsuit a little, what are three MUST HAVES from your collection that our readers need to make their style Unregistered?
“1) The Military sweat suit if definitely a must have. You can throw it on with heels [and go out] or sneakers and go to the mall. It is a universal outfit that constantly sells out.”

“2) The Dlano Button Down is also a must have. Think of it as the all purpose shirt. You need it because it is a unisex item that is clean cut and versatile for any occasion.”

“3) Finally, the Venus and Mars Jumpsuit. Out of all three this piece will is a must have for the female reader of Unregistered Style for more than one reason. Ladies can dress it up and dress it down. It is a customer preference that we keep restocking.”

These pieces are great! The jumpsuit is definitely something that I need to check out not only do I love the simplicity of only having to iron one thing, but I cannot find a jumpsuit that does not give me an awkward fit around the hips! Can you tell me what sets your brand apart from the average street wear brand?
“I know that our stance on quality sets us apart. Everything we sell goes under quality control.

Additionally, a few designs are designed by me like the Venus and Mars jumpsuit, the Khloe dress, and the Dlano top. Those are all Milano cut and sew.

The other items are manufactured.”

brands_milanodirouge1_012816_05The Highroad F/W 15 Retrieved 1/18/2016 From Milanodirouge.com

All of your products, the cut and sew items and the manufactured items are amazing, but where do you find your inspiration for these pieces?
“I find inspiration through blogs, fashion tips, motivation tips, all lead me into designing. I was always into fashion and design but never thought fashion design. I started off as a blogger [and transitioned into designing]. Milano Di Rouge is my first clothing line ever.”

With this being your baby, I know you have planned for its future. Where do you see Milano Di Rouge going next season?
“As far as the lifestyle portion of the brand, I would like to take on a social initiative; I want to educate people on safe sex and HIV prevention. It will be geared it towards high school students because I want to use my brand and my platform to promote awareness to a topic that is not highlighted enough.

For the clothing line, I can see experimenting with more colors next season. I am such a black and white type girl which is why I added green and maroon, but I am thinking sparkles. I love streetwear but one of my longterm goals would be to branch out and do a collection that you wouldn’t even know is Milano, but that is further down the line so keep your eyes open. #UnregisteredStyle”

Brands: ONLY WITH KINGS

I know this sounds very cliche, but networking is such a valuable resource.Last month, I was kicking it with my homegirl, Rashida from TheMovePhilly.com, and she had a great idea for UnregisteredStyle. Recently, Rashida had the opportunity to reconnect with an old basketball friend, James.

Basketball friend? Yes, you know how everyone has those recreational friends they hoop with on a regular basis? Well, that’s James and Rashida.

After spending a few hours on the court, they had a chance to sit down and catch up on their latest entrepreneur endeavors. While Rashida discussed her latest blog ventures with TheMovePhilly, James mentioned his clothing line, “ONLY WITH KINGS.”

As an avid reader of our blog, Rashida thought it would be a great opportunity to link James and I together. Recently, I met up with James and his business partner, Koba Khit, to discuss ONLY WITH KINGS. Check out the full interview below!

post_owk_031515_02

Let’s discuss the history of your brand. When and why were you created?
“We’re actually really new in terms of clothing, about three months in, but the ideals behind Only With Kings has been existent for over three years.  I started off as an indie hip-hop musician(still my first love) putting together events throughout the city of Philadelphia. I went by James Owk my real name and I still do. The clothing line just grew over time organically. I needed a logo to represent myself out at shows so I connected with this cat Emanuel “Manny” Sofolawe, an excellent graphic artist who helped me bring my vision to life. Shoutout to the G.

Shortly after, I found myself messing around in Adobe AI and Photoshop. I became extremely curious so I linked up with someone who has become like a mentor to me. Justin Porro, Another incredibly skilled graphic artist. Big Up to Justin that’s my dude. I kept playing around with ideas all the while recording music in my closet until a close friend of mine, Koba said “Yo,I wanna see that shit up on a shirt G! Stop sleeping on your shit.”  So I made some phone calls and took a risk.

“Always in GOOD Company” is our motto. Keeping people around us who push us to be accountable, responsible, and challenge us to be better people, better creatives, better leaders so that we can better develop strategies to monetize those skill sets is paramount. I think so especially as a person of color.”

post_owk_031515_06

What is the objective of your brand?
“I’m a visionary. The objective is to re-define leadership in the modern world using technology as a means to build people instead of break people. I want people to feel like anything is possible, because I for one believe that it is. That challenge begins with the youth. It’s a constant. My parents and siblings came to the United States as refugees from Cambodia in spring 1982. That summer I was born. I’m forever grateful for being able to be raised in the United States. The exposure has done wonders for me. I’ve lost but gained also. The birth of this brand is part of my gratitude that I will continue to show in my personal and professional life.”

post_owk_031515_04

What does your brand offer to your consumers and customers?
“The brand offers a space to grow one’s lifestyle with confidence. It’s simple but clean. I don’t think the designs are too overzealous. The panda functions as a gateway into my world as a creative person. I like the ability to move hand to hand. There’s nothing more gratifying then meeting someone who wants to support and break bread with him/her about his/her life and how it intersects with mine.

It’s real. This is just the beginning. I want people to get ready to step out into the world, put on our brand and say to themselves, “Yeah, I look clean as fuck. I’m ready now.”

post_owk_031515_05

What are your long term goals for your brand?
“To become more than just symbol. Something iconic that inspires generations to come that want to change the world for the better. Leave a legacy. That takes work. It’s not easy. I don’t want it to be either. That wouldn’t make sense to me. But working towards the ideal is what fuels me. The process is just as important as the product if not more in certain moments.

Like I said earlier, re-define leadership. Then learn to monetize that leadership and pass it on to the next. I don’t know what’s in store, but I’m having a fucking good time. My team and friends believe in me, which is something that is new to me. So what do I do? Believe in my self. Shoutout to Mike and Dan. Those guys are some amazing ninjas.”

post_owk_031515_01

I have to admit, James and Koba made sure that this was one of the best interviews! We definitely kicked back, listened to music, laughed, had a few drinks, and go a lot of business done. That’s what this all about, meeting great people and having a good time!
