“Welcome to “Style Spotlight,” a series dedicated to our most inspiring, fashion influencers.”
Introducing Alexis, a free spirited fashionista from South Jersey.
Hey everyone, and welcome back! It’s time for our latest style spotlight. For this weeks Q&A series, we caught up with our local poet and business owner friend Alexis of @sawdadi. Since last year, Alexis has been on our radar. We were more than ecstatic when she agreed to participate in the Q&A series. So, without further ado, here’s what Alexis had to say in regards to her fashion and personal style preferences:
Where are you from?
South Jersey/Burlington, NJ (Yup, like the “Coat Factory).
How do you define your personal style? What are your inspirations?
By nature, versatility and duality are my specialty ( I’m free spirited person, but I’m pretty solid ). My style tends to reflect both. I like unique pieces, but I also like simple fits with a pop of color. Since my style often varies, it really depends on how I’m feeling and what mood I’m in that day ( I can go from hipster trendy to boho chic). I’m inspired by the color Turquoise, flowers, and New Orleans culture. People like Tracee Ellis Ross, Kahlana Barfield, Cris Cavallari, and my best friend Kamry Marie also inspire me. Collectively, they light my fire.
What are the essential pieces you must have in your closet?
Boyfriend jeans, baggy pants, a sleek wrap dress, a kimono, a graphic tee/a crop top, and hi-top Converses. It sounds like a lot, but those things are important!
Where do you shop?
ASOS, Forever 21, thrifting, and random IG boutiques!
Describe your personal style in three words?
Spirited, refined, and gratifying!
Any fashion related tips?
First, if you don’t know where to start with picking a “fit,” start with a unique accessory ( shoes, hat, jewelry, etc.), and then base your outfit around the colors of the accessory or you can flip it . Get one simple piece ( solid colored dress or a simple color top with jeans), and flair it up with some accessories. Having style doesn’t have to be hard. Next, if you like it, get it! Don’t always worry what other people are doing. Even if you like to follow trends, still keep a part of “you.” Last, be intentional about the pieces you wear. Ask yourself, “What does this say about me? Does this describe who I am?” Anyone can throw on clothes, but when you place pieces together with your heart, it becomes your “style.”. Only buy items that you absolutely love, pieces that speak to you because when people see you, your style will speak FOR you.
