Street Style: Tied Around the Waist

Tying a shirt around your waist is just as common in 2013 as cutting up a pair of jeans and turning them into high wasted denim shorts. As celebrities continue to tie shirts around their waists with almost every outfit, this once extinct trend from the past has resurfaced into a popular staple again right before our eyes. Various celebrities including Rihanna, Pharrell, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, and Rob Kardashian have been photographed tying shirts around their waists.

Similar to any other fashion trend, there is a certain level of confidence and appeal that allows an individual to pull off any look.

So, we decided to contact our neighborhood friend, Tannis, to demonstrate how a woman would wear an outfit that incorporates a tied shirt around the waist.

Tannis was last featured in an “After 5” post found here, wearing dinner date appropriate attire with a black and white color scheme. Tannis knows a thing or two about how to transition between looks. She decided to trade her sophisticated look for a throwback inspired outfit.

“I would wear this as a day outfit in the city (New York). It’s a fun, light weight fit with a nostalgic 90s feels. I love my Timberland boots because it reminds me of 90s fashion but they’ve remained an applicable fashion option for decades now. The 2pac tee is just a fun shirt and my leather detailed shorts are a staple item in my summer wardrobe.” – Tannis

We are definitely feeling Tannis’ entire outfit. From the 2Pac graphic tee, to the Timberland boots, Tannis is ready to take her vintage inspired outfit to the streets of New York.

Now, I know you are thinking, boots and shorts?! Hey what can we say. Boots and shorts were the must have look for most females that travel using the New York subway system this summer.

Based on the two outfits we have seen Tannis in thus far, it’s obvious that her look and style are very multidimensional:

“Style is simply the way you go about expressing yourself. It’s a fluid ideology that can change day to day and often depends on how you might be feeling one day. I think fashion and style are two different things because fashion relates to what’s “in” and style is largely based on personal preferences.” -Tannis

Tannis purchased each article of clothing from stores like Forever 21, Michael Kors, Good Wood & Sample Sale, and a variety of thrift stores.
