After 5: The Crop Top

Revealing, adventurous, and confident are three words that describe a midriff wearing woman. Revealing in a sense that a woman can expose areas of her body that are typically covered. Adventurous meaning that a woman is taking a risk with her style and body through public exposure. Finally, confidence represents a woman that embraces her inner femininity within society.

With summer rapidly approaching in a few days, we wanted to dedicate a post to another popular trend in women’s fashion, the midriff or crop top.

For this feature, we had the opportunity to catch up with our DC friend, Cache’. As a college student living North Carolina, Cache’ is never afraid to bring her DC inspired fashion trends below the Mason Dixon line.
post_woman2_041114_03Although crop tops have been very appealing to women of all shapes and sizes, its not the easiest trend to pull off. Depending on your shape in size, you may have to reconsider the type of crop top you plan to purchase. Lauren Conrad from MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” provides us with a five suggestions on how to style your crop top:

1) Play with proportions: Like so many other styles, wearing a crop top is all about proportion play. To strike a balance with your tinier top, wear a high-waisted skirt or high-rise trousers on the bottom. That way, only a sliver of skin will be showing and you can keep this trend feeling ladylike. Definitely no low-cut jeans! (Again, this isn’t the ‘90s.) This Alice + Olivia look is right on point.

2) Pair with a pencil: Another key to pulling off the crop top is pairing it with a more conservative bottom. Since the pencil skirt is the epitome of sleek and sophisticated style, she loves how it looks with a crop top. Think of it as ‘party on the top, business on the bottom.’

3) Box it off: Wearing a boxy, cropped sweater might feel a little less scary than a skin-tight top. Luckily, there are so many cute styles of cropped sweaters this season.

4) Cover Up: If your tummy feels too exposed with a bare midriff, try layering an open cardigan, jacket, or blazer over your top so that only a hint of skin is showing in the front. Not only will this make you feel a little more covered up, but it’s also a great way to keep this look weather appropriate during the cooler spring months.

5) Leave it to Layers: She lovse the look of a cropped sweater with a crisp button-down shirt underneath. Flat abs or not, anyone can pull off this chic look.

“Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.” -Henry David Thoreau

In the past, the “Cool Kids” of the 90s wore midriff revealing tops in the public eye. In 2014, a similar situation has transpired. In fact, more than ever before, crop tops are being paired with pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses.

For Cache’, she paired her crop top with a pair of high-waisted, denim jeans. We at the UnregisteredStyle aprove her entire outfit! For instance, check out the details in her crop top! Her shoulders are decked out in metal spikes, adding modern twist to the simple midriff top. She states, “I love my top because it want your average crop top, I brought because of its edgy-ness. The spikes on the top were everything.”

To finish off her look, Cache’ threw on her favorite pair of black, pointed-toe pumps.
